Convocatorias 1. 44th Annual Convention, Northeast Modern Language Association (NeMLA) March 21-24, 2013 Boston, Massachusetts GENDERED SPACES: THE PLACES OF SPANISH WOMEN’S FILM AND THEATER The goal of this seminar is to explore the complex relationship between gender and space in both contemporary Spanish women?s cinema and theater. What exactly is ?female space? and how is it used by dramatists and directors to convey female-centered messages while simultaneously addressing universal themes? In theater, how does space function both at the textual level as well as on stage? Is it fundamentally a case of mimesis, metaphor or something else entirely? Many dramatists employ spatial realism as a tool to highlight and hence subvert traditional female roles on stage, but others use postmodern and absurdist distancing techniques to create metaphorical spaces in which characters create their own narratives and identities. In film, the spaces to be discussed include those in front, behind and on the movie screen. Some points of departure for film could include the politics of everyday spaces and the division between public and private spheres in women?s cinema; the spectatorial space of the place of a female audience; the movie theater as heterotopia and heterochronia; and the space behind the camera made by women filmmakers. How does the representation of these spaces differ between film and theater? Is the space created by directors and playwrights a safe one for women? Finally, what is the space, off-screen, and off stage, like? Is this is the symbolic space of women in feminist theory that, according to de Lauretis consists of spaces in the margins of hegemonic discourses, social spaces carved in the interstices of institutions and in the chinks and cracks of the power-knowledge apparati?? Seminar participants will be free to address these and other definitions of this allusive and elusive notion in order to illuminate the work of contemporary women dramatists and filmmakers alike. III Congreso Internacional de Estudios Caribeños (Abril 11-13, 2013) “Miradas al Caribe: Cine, Literatura y Estudios de Género” Marquette University Milwaukee, Wisconsin Keynote Speaker Zoé Valdés Abstracts should not be more than a page long and should include paper title, affiliation, address, telephone number and email. Presentations are limited to 20 minutes and a panel/session will be composed of a maximum of 3 presenters. Proposals for panels/sessions should be no more than 2 pages long and should include title, brief explanation of the session, title of each presentation, and information of each participant. Papers may be read in English, French, or Spanish. Deadline for abstracts is January 15, 2013. Graduate students are encouraged to participate. Registration fees of $125.00 for faculty and professionals; $65.00 for students and retirees will be due upon acceptance. Congreso CEISAL Consejo Europeo de Investigaciones Sociales de América Latina Memoria, Presente y Porvenir en América Latina Universidade Fernando Pessoa Porto, Portugal, 12-15 Junio de 2013 Convocatoria de Ponencias sobre literatura CEISAL, la Universidad Fernando Pessoa y el Núcleo de Estudios Latinoamericanos invitan a participar en este encuentro desde el 12 hasta el 15 de junio de 2013, para interpretar los hechos en los diferentes campos de las ciencias sociales. Dentro de estos caminos observaremos la construcción histórica y la identidad latinoamericana en el siglo XXI, promoviendo una mayor autorreflexión y para facilitar diálogos transdisciplinarios. Por ello, se abren las propuestas para ponencias sobre literatura hispanoamericana, desde el 1 de septiembre hasta el 1 de noviembre del 2012. Los interesados deberán enviar sus propuestas en forma de un abstract de max. 15 líneas (aprox. 300 palabras), indicando claramente el objetivo de la ponencia y sus puntos centrales. Job Offers Hispanic Poetry Job at Whitman College Title: Assistant Professor of Spanish Department: Spanish Tenure track position in Spanish, with an expertise in Hispanic Poetry at the rank of assistant professor. Effective August, 2013. Ph.D. in Spanish or appropriate area required. The successful candidate will teach all levels of Spanish language in the context of culture, introduction to literature and critical thinking skills courses in Spanish, advanced seminars on Hispanic poetry (encompassing both Spanish Peninsular and Latin American), and additional advanced seminars in at least one of the following three areas: 1) Latin American Literature, 2) U.S. Latino and Latina Literature and Culture, and/or 3) Film and Theater; and will participate in the supervision of senior projects and theses. Native or near-native fluency in Spanish and English required. The successful candidate will also share in fulfilling the departmental commitment to the College’s first-year seminar (Encounters).
