The position's tenure home will be in Spanish and Portuguese Studies, with 50%-time work effort dedicated to that department and 50% to the Institute for Global Studies. This position reflects an ongoing departmental focus on interdisciplinary approaches to Global Spanish and Portuguese through research on issues connected to the nexus of colonialism, postcolonialism, and globalization, and is part of a college-wide initiative at the University of Minnesota to build interdisciplinary ties among departments across the arts, humanities, and social sciences. Preference will be given to candidates with strong, interdisciplinary theoretical profiles. Desirable areas of research and expertise may focus on issues, in modern and/or contemporary Spain, such as postcoloniality and responses to globalization, nationalism(s) and the relationship of cultural production to national/regional identities, immigration/cultural integration/intercultural relations, and/or postcolonial gender and sexuality studies. Successful candidates will demonstrate the ability to carry out a rigorous program of research, outstanding teaching in a broad range of courses, graduate student advising, and contribute to shared governance. A Ph.D. or foreign equivalent in Spanish or a related field bridging the humanities and social sciences (e.g. anthropology, geography, history, gender and sexuality studies) is required, as well as native or near-native fluency in English and Spanish. Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience. Candidates will be evaluated according to the overall quality of their academic preparation and scholarly work, evidence of research ability, evidence of commitment to teaching and skills as a teacher, and strength of recommendations. Duties/Responsibilities Faculty in the College of Liberal Arts are expected to maintain an active program of scholarly research, develop and teach undergraduate courses, advise undergraduate and graduate students, and contribute service to the department, college, and profession. The development of additional courses and research themes that complement and extend current departmental expertise is strongly encouraged. This position will require teaching four semester-length courses per academic year at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. NUEVAS PUBLICACIONES My book, Isabel Allende’s House of the Spirits Trilogy: Narrative Geographies, was published this summer by Tamesis. The book uses an approach rooted in cultural geography to study the construction of socio-political, socio-ethnic, socio-sexual, and textual spaces in three novels that I treat as a trilogy, House, Daughter of Fortune, and Portrait in Sepia. The first two chapters offer a detailed introduction/overview of Allende’s writing within a spatial framework, and a synthesis of geo-reading with a particular emphasis on feminist geographies and the dynamics of power. The subsequent chapters explore the novels’ construction of ethnicity, political borderlands in house and nation, body/space, and written/photographed space. This sophisticated study explores the narrative architecture of Allende's House of the Spirits [1982], Daughter of Fortune [1999], and Portrait in Sepia [2000] as a trilogy, proposing that the places created in these novels subvert the patriarchal norms that have governed politics, sexuality, and ethnicity. Rooted in the Foucauldian premise that the history of space is essentially the history of power, and supported by Susan Stanford Friedman's cultural geographies of encounter as well as Gloria Anzaldúa's study of borderlands, this study shows that, by rejecting traditional spatial hierarchies, Allende's trilogy systematically deterritorializes the elite while shifting the previously marginalized to the physical and thematic centers of her works. This movement provides the narrative energy which draws the reader into Allende's universe, and sustains the 'good story' for which she has been universally acclaimed. Thank you.
