Positions 1.University of Tennessee, Assistant Professor The Department of Modern and Classical Languages and Literatures at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga invites applications for the tenure-track position of Assistant Professor of Spanish. The Ph.D. is expected by date of appointment, August 1, 2013. Candidates should have a specialty in Medieval or Golden Age Peninsular Studies. The ability to teach Spanish linguistics, phonetics or romance philology is highly desirable. University of Minnesota, Spanish Assistant Professor Morris Campus. Humanities Division Required/Preferred Qualifications We seek an individual with enthusiasm for teaching undergraduates in a nationally recognized liberal arts college. Ph.D. in Spanish or related field preferred; ABD close to completion will also be considered. Required: demonstrable expertise in Latin American literature prior to 20th Century; some college-level teaching in Spanish, which may include TA experience; excellent command of Spanish and English. Experience teaching upper division literature courses desirable. Candidate with Ph.D. in hand by date of appointment will be hired as an assistant professor; ABD will be hired as an instructor. Candidates should be available for an MLA interview. Duties/Responsibilities The successful candidate must be committed to productive scholarship and excellent teaching. Responsibilities include five courses per year, including upper division seminars and surveys, and all levels of language instruction (interdisciplinary assignments may be offered in Latin American Area Studies, Honors, Gender, Women and Sexuality Studies or our Intellectual Community freshman course); undergraduate advising; productive scholarship; participation in the governance and advancement of the program as well as the division and campus. Feministas Unidas Panel From the Conquest narratives of the New World and Spanish Inquisition testimonies to the ravages of the Spanish Civil War, ETA and, more recently, the March 3rd, 2004 train bombings in Madrid, Spain has struggled with the problem of terrorism. Likewise, Latin America and the Caribbean have seen their share of terrorist activities as dictators and factions as diverse as the FARC and Sendero Luminoso have unleashed their vitriol on citizens. In this panel, we seek to engage the language of violence/terrorism in its diverse forms as it has manifested itself in the works of women writers, film makers and visual artists of the Spanish-speaking and U.S. Latina worlds. We invite proposals for twenty-minute papers from scholars whose work focuses on questions such as: What is terrorism? How is terrorism related to exile? How is violence/terrorism related to women's experience/women's creativity/woman's (in)visibility? To what extent is the rhetoric of a “war on terror” or “horror” gendered and how has this rhetoric changed over time from a feminist perspective? How has “terror” manifested itself, or conversely, remained invisible, in Spanish language literature, film and visual culture by women? From a feminist perspective, what draws the reader’s attention to the “spectacle” of terror? What ethical or moral responsibilities do women have to teach materials to students of Spanish and to what ends?
