invites applications for the position of: Tenure-Track Assistant Professor of Spanish
The Department of Languages and Cultures at West Chester University of Pennsylvania is seeking applicants for a tenure-track position in Spanish. Candidates’ field should be Latin American film and cultural studies. Expertise and strong interest in the development of online and hybrid courses in our program is a plus. The successful candidate will teach traditional and alternative-format language, film, and culture courses in both Spanish and English.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Requirements for applicants: Ph.D. in Spanish or Hispanic Studies in hand or degree requirements completed by August 1, 2014. Scholarly expertise in Latin American film and Latin American cultural studies, as well as native or near-native proficiency in Spanish are required. The successful candidate will also have an active research agenda and be familiar with current trends in pedagogy. Finalists must successfully complete on-site interview and teaching demonstration.

Ph.D. in Spanish or Hispanic Studies in hand by August 15, 2014; a strong commitment to, experience, and evidence of excellence in a) Spanish language instruction and b) culture courses related to Spain and/or Latin America in English and/or in Spanish; experience with new technologies and familiarity with current trends in pedagogy; native or near-native fluency in Spanish; and evidence of strong research potential and ability. Experience with curriculum and program development and online teaching a plus. The successful candidate may teach traditional and alternative-format courses.

“Negro y femenino: las escritoras de novela criminal en el ámbito ibérico” -- “Noir and Female: Women Writers of Crime Novels in the Iberian Peninsula”
The crime novel, understood as a narrative structured around a crime and its resulting investigation, is one of the most interesting and prolific phenomenon in today’s popular culture. Whether combined or not with other genres –horror, urban, historical or political novels– it immediately echoes the changes and contradictions in reality, as has happened most recently with the economic crisis. Contemporary crime novels, especially those written by women, comment on the changes that have taken place, on the one hand, socially, in the dialogue between sexualized relationships and power –and so they portray new models of both masculinity and female power figures (police, judges)– and, on the other, narratively, in the representation of all aspects of violence –violences– against women and by women.
Despite the mainstreaming –canonization almost– of the crime novel and the wealth of women writers of this genre in the last twenty five years, the critical bibliography that specifically analyses these texts from the perspective of gender is still limited and primarily belongs to the Anglo-American academic tradition. This dossier aims to broaden this field of study.
The 2015 dossier for Lectora: revista de mujeres y textualidad is open to readings of the crime novel written in the Iberian Peninsula from the following areas of analysis:
- discourses on violence against women and on the violence used by women.
- the complex relationships, intersections and paradoxes caused by the incorporation of women within state power structures, analyzed from the framework of feminist theory.
- female power figures in the context of crime investigations as represented in contemporary filmic discourse and especially in television series based on crime novels written by women.
- the emergence of female authorship in this genre in the social context of the Spain and Portugal of the past twenty years, especially taking into account the changes in gender relationships in these countries.
The articles, written in Catalan, Spanish, Galician, Basque, English, French, Italian or Portuguese, should follow the journal’s style guidelines and be sent before June 1, 2014.
The coordinator of this dossier is Elena Losada Soler, who holds a PhD in Hispanic Philology and is professor of Portuguese Studies at the University of Barcelona. She is also head researcher of the project Women and Crime Novel in Spain (1975-2010): Women Writers, Power Figures, Victims and Criminals (MUNCE) (FEM 2011-22870), within the framework of which she has organized various seminars and conferences.
