| Estimada membresía, Espero que os haya ido muy bien el regreso a vuestras respectivas universidades y que el trabajo no se os haya acumulado peligrosamente… como a mí. En esta primera circular de septiembre incluyo avisos y comunicados referentes a congresos, colaboraciones, becas y homenajes. A poco menos de mes y medio de la celebración del XVIII Congreso Internacional de la AILCFH quiero recordaros que es imprescindible pagar la cuota de membrecía para poder aparecer y participar en el congreso (la fecha límite para ello es el 15 de septiembre). Profoundly Spanish in origin, yet almost immediately internationalized, the Spanish Civil War had a marked impact on the politics and culture of many nations. Considered by many of its generation as the first ideological war, it has become for many since a precursor of the Second World War sometimes subsumed into, or obscured by, this latter in our memory of the period. Yet, its significance continues to be reflected in a variety of cultural representations of the conflict emanating from many different nations and cultures and in its continual pertinence and interest as a subject of historical research. In 2009, the Journal of War and Culture Studies (published by Intellect Books) will be devoting an issue to the Spanish Civil War. This issue will seek to explore the impact of the Spanish Civil War upon the culture of those nations directly or indirectly involved in the conflict itself, examining the dynamic, shaping force that the war became for many artists, writers, and intellectuals throughout the world from 1936 to the present. The editors therefore welcome papers examining these aspects of the Civil War in both European and non-European representations of it. Articles should be written in English and of 5 – 6000 words in length. They should be sent to Helena Scott(H.Scott@westminster.ac.uk) at the University of Westminster by the 1st April 2009. Articles should be submitted in accordance with Intellect’s guidelines to be found at http://www.intellectbooks.co.uk/auth/links/StyleGuide.pdf. 2) Spilling Over: A Fat, Queer Anthology Editor: Jessica Giusti, Feminist Studies Ph.D. Student, University of Minnesota Contact: spillingover@gmail.com Submission Deadline: December 1, 2008 Despite the attention given by queer studies to the materiality of bodies and the cultural and social inscriptions that designate them, still a dearth of both scholarship and literature exists around intersections of gender, sexuality, and fatness. As fat studies begins to emerge as a viable academic location of inquiry, questions surface as to how fat bodies, deemed "excessive" in their trespasses of size and space, create even more complex subject positions when compounded by queer desires. This proposed anthology seeks contributions addressing junctions of "fat" and "queer" in pieces that consider the representations and resistances of non-normative corporeality and also writings considering the theoretical conceptions of these intricate subjectivities. Spilling Over will reflect the notions of excess, boundaries, and containment implied by the labels "fat" and "queer" both singularly and collectively. In the form of scholarly writing and creative non-fiction pieces, essay submissions might consider (but are not limited to): • theorizing the concept of "excess" as it pertains to fatness and queerness • fat and queer identities; personal narratives; reclaiming "fat" and "queer" • notions of (in)visibility, hypervisibility, and passing and/or privilege • intersections of race, class, gender, sexuality, ethnicity, (dis)ability, age, and religion • the economics of the obesity "epidemic" and the diet industry • fat, queer art and performance; performativity • pleasure, sex-positivity, eroticizing non-normative bodies • acceptance movements, political activism, resistance • the engagement of feminism with fatness • global, transnational, transcultural constructions of fat, queer bodies and lives • critical reflections of fatness and queerness in media, literature, film, music, and visual arts • the rhetoric of fat oppression, fatphobia, homophobia, transphobia, bigotry, responding to and/or addressing hate speech By December 1, 2008, please send your 2,000 – 6,000 word submission, along with your complete contact information and a 50-100 word biography, to spillingover@gmail.com with the subject line of "Spilling Over – Submission." THEME: PESTILENCE, CATASTROPHE, WAR AND DESTRUCTION IN HISPANIC LITERATURE From Biblical times and probably earlier, pestilence’s tracks can be traced across the face of history and literature, chronicles and prophecy, from the plagues of Egypt and Medieval scourges such as the Black Death, Bubonic plague, and Red Death to AIDS and contemporary pandemics—anthrax, Scarlet fever, Cholera, yellow fever, Malaria, typhus, smallpox, diphtheria, poliomyelitis, and more recently, Ebola. Infectious diseases have resulted in epidemic or pandemic outbreaks since time immemorial and continue to proliferate. The term pestilence is applied to any especially virulent and highly infectious disease; it also applies to parasites causing widespread sickness and death. Discussion continues as to whether the first pandemic of Constantinople in the Sixth Century was caused by the same bacterium as the bubonic plague (associated by some historians with the Black Death). This scourge in the Fourteenth Century is believed to have killed one fourth of the population of England, one third of the population of Europe and half the population of China. Both the “Plague of Justinian” (Constantinople) and Black Death appear to be associated with rats and fleas, and bubonic plague with its periodic reappearances holds the record for the most devastating of epidemics or pandemics. The Black Death continued to strike Europe until well into the Seventeenth Century and is represented in literature from the Decameron and Romeo and Juliet to Defoe’s Journal of the Plague Year chronicling the 1665 London outbreak. In the Nineteenth Century Poe penned “The Masque of the Red Death” (one of the first to treat that plague). Such well-known writers as Alessandro Manzoni, Hermann Hesse, Elia Kazan and Albert Camus (The Plague) have treated pestilence, blending history and fiction. More recently, numerous science fiction writers and American television shows such as House, Torchwood, Third Watch and Grey’s Anatomy have devoted one or more episodes to fictionalizing plagues and pestilence. Pestilence has often shaped or reshaped history, causing mass migrations or accompanying wars, decimating armies, wiping out economies and shifting power. Its historicity notwithstanding, its uses in literature include the allegorical, and over time it is becoming increasingly fictionalized. But what of its presence in Hispanic literatures? What is distinctive about the ways in which Hispanic writers have treated the theme? MONOGRAPHIC REVIEW/REVISTA MONOGRÁFICA invites papers of 12-15 pages on this topic. The papers should be prepared according to MLA format and the Monographic Review style sheet, submitted in hard copy and a high density diskette, with a 250-word abstract. Thank you and best wishes, The Susan Sontag Foundation THE 2009 SUSAN SONTAG PRIZE FOR TRANSLATION $5,000 grant for a literary translation from Spanish into English: PLEASE POST & DISTRIBUTE This $5,000 grant will be awarded to a proposed work of literary translation from Spanish into English and is open to anyone under the age of 30. The translation must fall under the category of fiction or letters, and the applicant will propose his or her own translation project. The project should be manageable for a five-month period of work, as the grant will be awarded in May 2009, and the translation must be completed by October 2009. Acceptable proposals include a novella, a play, a collection of short stories or poems, or a collection of letters that have literary import. Preference will be given to works that have not been previously translated. (Previously translated works will be considered, however applicants should include an explanation for why they are proposing a new translation.) Applicants wishing to translate significantly longer works should contact the Foundation before sending in their applications so that supplementary materials can be included. The prizewinner will be notified on May 15, 2009 and results will be announced online at www.susansontag.org. The recipient will be expected to participate in symposia on literary translation with established writers and translators, as well as public readings of their work once the translation has been completed. COMUNICADO ESPECIAL------------------------------------------- Envío por petición de Hilda Chacón A LA COMUNIDAD INTERNACIONAL: Denunciamos el reciente ataque del gobierno de Daniel Ortega contra el sacerdote y poeta Ernesto Cardenal. El Padre Cardenal había sido acusado en 2005 por injurias a raíz de una carta que publicó en defensa propia, y recibió una sentencia absolviéndolo de estos cargos y declarándolo inocente, tan absurda era la acusación. Ahora, un juez obediente a Ortega ha revocado esa sentencia declarándolo culpable. Esta acción es totalmente ilegal. La legislación nicaragüense considera que una sentencia sólo puede ser apelada en los seis meses siguientes, de lo contrario se considera cosa juzgada, y no puede cambiarse. Pero el sistema judicial responde a la voluntad política de Daniel Ortega. Todo aparece como una clara represalia por la permanente actitud crítica del padre Cardenal contra los abusos del gobierno de Ortega. Casualmente, esta sentencia fue dictada a su regreso de la toma de posesión del Presidente Lugo en Paraguay, a la que fue invitado de honor y a la que Daniel Ortega se vio impedido de asistir por el rechazo de las organizaciones feministas a su presencia, dada la acusación de abuso sexual que le hiciera su hijastra, Zoilamérica Narváez. En Paraguay, como en otros lugares, Cardenal dijo lo que piensa de Ortega. La integridad de Ernesto Cardenal y sus credenciales como persona que ha dedicado su vida a la causa de la justicia, confieren enorme autoridad a sus críticas, tanto dentro como fuera de Nicaragua. Esto resulta intolerable para Daniel Ortega y es la razón por la cual Ernesto Cardenal ha sido condenado en un fallo judicial injusto y vengativo, y por tanto escandaloso. Ernesto Cardenal es la más reciente víctima del acoso sistemático orquestado en contra de todos aquellos que han levantado sus voces para denunciar la falta de transparencia, el estilo autoritario y el comportamiento inescrupuloso y la falta de ética de Daniel Ortega en su retorno al poder. Llamamos a los escritores y amigos de Nicaragua en el mundo a denunciar esta persecución política, a demandar el cese de estas acusaciones ilegales e infundadas y a expresar su solidaridad con Ernesto Cardenal y con el derecho del pueblo nicaragüense a vivir libre de miedo y represión. Ernesto Cardenal, uno de los mas extraordinarios hombres que el sol calienta, ha sido victima de la mala conciencia de un Daniel Ortega indigno de su propio pasado, incapaz ahora de reconocer la grandeza de alguien a quien hasta un papa, en vano, intentó humillar. A Daniel Ortega le pido que se mire en un espejo y me diga qué es lo que encontrará en él. Si le da vergüenza, al menos que tenga la valentía de pedir perdón. Si no lo pide, si no levanta la voz para clamar, él mismo, contra la condena de Ernesto Cardenal, sabremos que sus méritos humanos y políticos han caído a cero. Una vez más una revolución ha sido traicionada desde dentro.
