| AILCFH Circular 3.1 Marzo 2008 9 de Marzo, 2008 Estimada membresía, En el mismo día en el que se celebran las elecciones generales en España, les escribo para recordarles por última vez este año que, en caso de no haberlo hecho ya, procedan al pago de la cuota anual de la asociación. El pago se puede efectuar electrónicamente a través del sitio de la asociación (http://ailcfh.org) o enviando un cheque a la tesorera. María André les ruega a quienes envíen cheques para pagar la cuota que se aseguren que en el cheque figura su nombre y dirección; ella sigue recibiendo cheques sin nombre lo que le hace perder muchísimo tiempo a la hora de gestionar el recibo de la cuota. En breve presentaremos la convocatoria para la ratificación de las mociones aprobadas durante la última asamblea general de la AILCFH celebrada en Sevilla el pasado octubre 2007; recuerden que para poder votar es necesario haber sido miembro de la asociación como mínimo durante los dos últimos años. Quisiera recordarles también que el 1 de abril se vence el plazo para el envío de propuestas para el XVIII congreso de la AILCFH que tendrá lugar entre los días 16 al 18 de octubre del 2008 en Agnes Scott College, Atlanta. Aunque el sitio oficial del congreso no está disponible todavía, se puede consultar la información sobre el mismo en el sitio de la asociación (http://ailcfh.org) y en el sitio de Grafemas (http://grafemas.org). Seguimos con el proceso de actualización de los datos personales de la membresía. Por favor, entren en el sistema administrativo de la asociación (http://ailcfh.echapters.com) y editen su información (dirección postal, correo electrónico) según sea necesario. También les vuelvo a instar a que incluyan una pequeña descripción de su área de especialización e intereses académicos para compartir con el resto de la membresía. Si no recuerdan su clave de acceso al sistema, al final de la página de acceso hay una sección donde pedir la confirmación de esta información introduciendo el correo electrónico al que les llega esta circular. Send abstracts to Stacey Schlau ( sschlau@wcupa.edu) by March 15. 2) The 58th Annual Mountain Interstate Foreign Language Conference will be held at The University of North Carolina Wilmington, 9-11 October 2008. It will be hosted by the Department of Foreign Languages & Literatures and the College of Arts and Sciences at UNCW. The Mountain Interstate Foreign Language Conference (MIFLC) is an annual forum of university, college, and high school scholars and teachers for exchanging ideas and advancing the cause of scholarship in foreign language studies. (See the call for papers for a listing of typical areas.) It is held each fall at a host university in Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, or West Virginia, although its draw is national and international in scope. The conference consists of three days of presentations in multiple sessions, with a banquet and specially invited keynote speakers. The conference also sponsors the MIFLC Review, an annual journal of selected papers on foreign languages and literatures from the conference and edited by Leonor Ulloa. XXVIII International Congress of the Latin American Studies Association Latin America has long been known as the world region with the highest levels of inequality, yet the degree and nature of inequalities vary across the domains of economics, politics and culture. The struggle to overcome inequalities has engendered social movements for centuries, and today as in various moments in the past has motivated interventions by policymakers. Many of these efforts have not been without impact, and their achievements may be underestimated by scholars and citizens alike. Yet by all accounts the distribution of assets and power remains fundamentally unequal even as the region undergoes profound changes in its social and economic structures, political institutions and cultural norms. Neither theory nor practice has grasped adequately the complexities of Latin America’s inequalities or the factors that sustain or undermine them over time. Understanding of inequalities requires insights from disciplines across the social sciences and humanities, and demands attention to the circumstances and strategies of the rich as well as the poor, of the privileged as well as the subaltern. You are invited to submit a proposal for LASA2009 addressing the above theme and/or any topics related to the program tracks. COLABORACIONES 1) Call for Papers: Letras Femeninas. Special Issue Summer 2009 Mujeres alborotadas: Early Modern and Colonial Women’s Cultural Production A Festschrift for Electa Arenal. Regarding early modern women as authors and cultural agents, in the past two decades feminist scholarly interest in well-known writers such as María de Zayas and Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz has led not only to exponential increase in critical bibliography on their work, but to a “boom” on texts authored by other women as well. Moreover, Hispanic literary historical research in general has provided a context for this research, by: 1) bringing new kinds of texts into focus by applying theoretical groundings including feminist, new historicist, post-/neo-colonial, and cultural studies; 2) studying a more diverse set of writers; 3) recognizing the necessity of interdisciplinary approaches; and 4) applying transatlantic perspectives. These trends too have helped to shape the new canons. This issue will assess these developments, examining women’s writing and cultural production in the Hispanic Atlantic world from 1500 to 1800 in light of the enormous body of feminist literary critical work produced in the past thirty years. We also wish to honor a pioneer in this field, the exemplary mujer alborotada Electa Arenal. In three books, more than 20 articles, and monumental professional contributions—including numerous collaborations and continuous mentoring--she has queried and widened the boundaries of disciplinary methods and scholarly content for feminist work in our fields. No one has done more to shape the study of early modern and colonial Hispanic women’s cultural production. The issue will be framed around three axes: 1) new syncretisms (theoretical developments at the confluence of feminist, post-/neo-colonialist, historicist, queer, and indigenist theoretical perspectives on the early modern and colonial periods; 2) “new” writers (studies of recently discovered works from the trans-Atlantic archives); and 3) new readings of key “old” writers (gendered interpretations of female or male, religious and secular writers). Suggested topics, all of which refer to the early modern and colonial period, include (but are not limited to): -re-examining the “new” canon -feminist literary work: process and product -impact of raced and classed identities on women’s writing -expressions of multiple kinds of sexualities -women writers’ influence on others: within continents and across the Atlantic -empire and gendered views of writing -inside and outside “the world”: religion and cultural production Essays in English, Portuguese, and Spanish will be accepted and should include an author’s biographical note. Articles: 17-25 pages, double space, Times New Roman 12-1”, in MLA style and Word format. Deadline for submitting 1-2 page abstracts: April 21. Authors will be notified of acceptance or rejection by May 26. Final papers will be due on September 15. Contributors must be members of AILCFH at the time of publication.
